With three successful EP’s under their belt, a string of east coast tours and festival performances alongside the likes of the Jungle Giants, Wolfmother and Gang of Youths, Gold Coast quartet The Vernons have been wowing Australian audiences for the last decade with their heart-pounding riffs and big raspy vocals.
They have been recognised as ‘a band to watch’ at the Queensland Music Awards, secured lucrative publishing deals in Australia and the US, scored airplay on Triple J and Triple M and their single ‘White Wine’ has clocked up close to 2,000,000 hits on Spotify and over 400,000 views on YouTube.
After taking a break from touring last year to write and record some new material, they burst back onto the scene in July this year with their new track ‘Mistress’ (which we reviewed in our August New Music column) and their mysterious and gritty follow-up single ‘Do What You Wanna Do’ has just hit the airwaves.
With the band set to release a blistering array of new material over the coming months, we thought we would catch up with frontman Jonny for a quick chat about the new single and soon-to-be-released tracks.
Congratulations on the release of your new single ‘Do What You Wanna Do’. Could you tell us a little bit about the track and the inspiration behind it?
Thank you. When we wrote the song we were trying to approach things a little differently than usual, and that’s probably why the song itself doesn’t sound like most of our other material. We think it’s important to keep things new and fresh and we had a lot of fun making this song doing just that.
We hear the time away from touring and in the studio was fruitful and that you have some new tracks ready to release. What can we expect from these new tracks and when can we get them into our ears?
It’s been a long time since we last released material, but we have spent a lot of that time writing and recording in the studio. We want to keep things fairly hush hush for now but we can promise you that there is a lot of material coming, and a lot of it is very different to what people might expect.
What have you guys been up to during COVID-19 and how are you going with it all?
We’re doing ok. We feel for roadies and crew and artists who do it full time and can’t work at the moment and send our best wishes. Earlier in the year, we were all going a little stir crazy when we were stuck at home, but us Queenslanders really have little to complain about. It’s actually given us a lot of time to write more material, so in a way, it’s been somewhat a blessing in disguise for us.
What have you got planned for the rest of the year? Any more live streaming or things that we can keep an eye out for?
Shows are unfortunately a bit of a no go at the moment but we are planning to release plenty of material. All we can say at this stage is that we plan to release a few songs over the next few weeks and months and we will hopefully have some big news to drop at the end of the year.
To keep up to date with The Vernons releases you can follow the band over on their socials Instagram and Facebook and can listen to ‘Do What You Wanna Do’ via all of your favourite streaming platforms.
