#StopAdani rally GOLD COAST calls on engineering company GHD to stand with community

Over 30 locals from Gold Coast rallied outside GHD’s office in Robina recently and received overwhelming support from members of the public as they passed by in their vehicles. This joins a National Week of Action (July 29 – Aug 2) in which #StopAdani groups are gathering at regional offices of international engineering company GHD to call on them to stand with the community which wants action on climate change, not Adani’s climate-wrecking coal mine.

Engineering consultancy GHD is a contractor working on Adani’s Carmichael coal mine project.

Marie Carvolth, member of Stop Adani Gold Coast said – “Already 50 contractors, including construction giant Downer, have ruled out working with Adani. These contractors align with the two thirds of Australians who are opposed to Adani’s coal mine and want to see it stopped.

“GHD is putting their reputation on the line by refusing to distance themselves from Adani’s climate-wrecking project. Burning coal is the leading cause of climate change which is already seeing Australians suffer from more intense bush fires, storms, heatwaves, floods and droughts. We are passionate about protecting our Reef, groundwater and climate from Adani’s coal and we will continue to let GHD know this.”

Graham Sharp, member of Stop Adani Gold Coast said – “GHD could lead the way to a future powered by renewable energy, developing infrastructure that provides jobs that are part of the climate solution for North Queensland.

“GHD claims it supports “environmentally and socially responsible operations” but it’s irresponsible to work with Adani to build Australia’s largest coal mine. GHD will continue to face opposition to their involvement so long as they ignore community concerns.”

Over 50 companies, including construction giant Downer, having already ruled out working with Adani on their Carmichael coal project. Adani’s coal mine will be the biggest in Australian history and comes at a time when we must stop building new coal mines to deal with the threat of climate change. Two-thirds of Australians are opposed to Adani’s coal mine which will fuel global warming, send the Black Throated Finch to extinction, have irreversible impacts on groundwater and drive coral bleaching which will wreck the Great Barrier Reef.
