Baker will also participate in an industry event the day prior focussed on surf cinematography as part of the Gold Coast Film Festival.

‘Breath’, sees Baker make his directorial debut. It’s a classic coming of age tale, focussed on the surf, set in a small coastal town in Western Australia. Lovers of Australian literature will be familiar with the story, based on the 2008 book by acclaimed author Tim Winton.

Baker has special ties with this part of the world and with the storyline itself. He grew up in Ballina and is “thrilled” to see the film premiere on the Gold Coast.

Having grown up surfing in the small Australian town of Ballina, and with teenage sons of his own, Baker said he felt instantly connected to the characters and themes in Winton’s novel before adapting the storyline for screen.

“The Gold Coast has long been a Mecca for those that share a deep fascination and respect for the ocean, and the magnificent impact it can have in shaping who you are,” Baker said.

“’Breath’ is a film about identity. An identity that is bound to the shifting landscapes of the Australia coastline,” Mr Baker said.
