Raising their voices for those who have none: Freedom Seekers

The Freedom Seeker concert will feature roots, rock and reggae, all for refugees at New Globe Theatre this month.

As well as raising funds for two refugee advocacy and immigration service providers, those artists performing are also lending their voice for those who have none. They’re calling on the Australian Government to abide by its international obligation to refugees. The lineup includes Big Iron, Rivermouth, Phil Monsour Band, The Molotov and Andy Dub. It all happens Sunday 14 September from 3.00pm.

Refugee Action Collective (RAC) and Refugee And Immigration Legal Service (RAILS) will benefit from funds raised.

Phil Monsour, who will launch a 12-track CD titled 100 days at the gig says he believes our society is defined by the way we treat the powerless and disadvantaged people who come to us for help.

“We become better people when we help each and look after each other,” Phil said.

“The Freedom Seeker concert celebrates our collective humanity. The idea that once the politics of fear and racism is removed from the discussion people will see that asylum seekers are just people like us running from terrible circumstance and seeking peace and freedom.”

Monsour’s new album features Sydney oud player Mohamed Youssef on half the tracks and is a step in the direction of one of his long-term ambitions: to blend Eastern sounds with his contemporary acoustic rock style. The album is his band’s third and is one where often the electric guitar is swapped for acoustic and drums for djembe. The title track is about a boatload of Palestinian refugees lost at sea while attempting to reach Australia.

As well as speaking about his album, Phil is also quick to acknowledge the diverse genres being covered on the night.

“The artists involved are all committed to using music not only as artistic expression but also to bring people together and to motivate people to seek a better world,” he said. “This is the second refugee benefit I have helped put together in Brisbane and I hope the freedom seeker concerts will become annual events.
