It’s been quite the global ride for Gold Coast garage rock outfit Girl and Girl, and it’s high time we celebrate their successes.
Following their huge Gold Coast Music prize win at the 2022 Gold Coast Music awards, this quirky four-piece has gone from strength to strength, building up a devoted fan base from their exciting live shows, racking up the streams, and garnering the attention of industry movers and shakers.
Even in their early days, Girl and Girl were in-demand for live shows, including support slots for Tiny Little Houses, Holy Holy, Floodlights and These New South Whales.
Their local successes include charting in the 4ZZZ’s hottest 100, headlining the Mountain Goat Valley Crawl, and having been named in music.com’s top 25 local rising acts.
But now, things have gone worldwide.
Girl and Girl were recently snapped up and signed to US Label Sub Pop, and are currently in the midst of a huge UK and European tour, including performances at The Great Escape, London’s Wide Awake Festival, and a support run with Partisan Records’ act Blondshell.

The quartet, comprised of features frontperson Kai James and his Aunty Liss on drums, with longtime friends Jayden Williams on guitar and Fraser Bell on bass, were too busy on tour for us to catch them for an interview about the Sub Pop signing, but they did release a new track and video ‘All I See’ in celebration of their new partnership, and they’ve had a few words to say about that along the way.
“Lyrics came last for ‘All I See,’ about 3 years after the track, and when I finally sat down and wrote them, I was pretty anxious about whether I had them right or not,” says Kai.
“A new Mylie Cyrus track played on the radio that afternoon, she too, was singing about houses burning down, and I took that as confirmation.
“So I thanked Mylie Cyrus and her great new track ‘Flowers’ and never looked back.”
Girl and Girl are currently working on new music for their Sub Pop debut, and we cannot wait to see what comes next for these local legends. You can check out ‘All I See’ on YouTube, and the rest of their stuff on the usual platforms. Follow @girlandgirl_music for news and updates.
