Food review: Tarte Bakery and Café

If baked treats have formed the backbone of your diet this year, you will be delighted by Tarte Bakery and Café, an enticing carb-oasis situated on a leafy corner of the popular James Street precinct in Burleigh.

Tarte is the latest offering by hospitality guru Chloe Watts, formerly of Paddock fame, who has been tirelessly toiling away to create a café that seamlessly blends fresh, modern coastal with old world charm.

Chloe’s attention to detail is incredible. From the 100 year-old bench sourced from an old theatre in NSW, to the thousands of hand-cut black tiles, Tarte is a treat for all the senses, with each visit revealing more design details that will have you enthralled.

One thing you need to bring with you when you visit Tarte is your appetite. Fresh sweet treats roll out of the ovens continuously and are seated upon vintage scales for your greedy eyes to peruse before you make your choice. There are established favourites such as lemon tarts, kouign amans, almond croissants and babkas that will always have a place in your heart, but the nostalgic pull of a warm cup of vanilla infused milk served in a cookie cup will no doubt win you over.

The dine-in menu is equally drool worthy, with dedicated bagel and tartine menus alongside such delicious dishes as Turkish eggs, miso scramble and a truffle infused five-cheeses toastie, you are not in for an easy decision!

Since we currently can’t travel, at Tarte you can pretend you’re seated in a Parisian Patisserie or a trendy SoHo café in New York as you sip on your coffee, nibble on your treats and watch the world pass by in carb-induced bliss.
Tarte is open daily from 6:30am to 3:00pm.
