Chasing more than just velvet

Soon to make their foray onto the pop music scene, Chasing Velvet are one of Australia’s freshest all-female pop duos, and their first single ‘If I May’ off debut EP ‘Replay’, which is out early August, suggests they’re a new breed of rising talent.  The Gold Coast pair are quirky, energetic and have their sights firmly set on new horizons.

Vocalist Amira Talbot and Vocalist/Drummer Naomi Grashuis say that while the EP took some time to create, they’re stoked with the result.

“We are ecstatic and overwhelmed that we can finally share our new music to our amazing fans,” Naomi said.

While both having previous performed, Chasing Velvet has been underway for a little longer than a year. Naomi said the pair met online.

“We had a mutual friend who is actually now our manager,” she said.

“Amira and I started talking for a bit, discovered we both had common interests, the main one being music… we both wanted to pursue the music industry and our mutual friend wanted to manage a band. Put one and one together, you have Chasing Velvet.”

Amira is currently enrolled at TAFE Queensland Gold Coast Region studying the Music Industry (performance) course. She says not only did she want to gain a better insight into the music industry, but she also wanted theoretical knowledge of musical ideas and concepts that would help her develop in her career.

“Most of the EP had been written prior to starting the course but being half way through the course currently I have definitely been advantageous in my proceedings with the band from my class work,” she said.

“I have a better understanding of music theory as well as business and legal aspects of the music industry that I am now grateful to be aware of.”

Naomi said their electro-pop sounds will translate to a live setting in a modern and unique way.

“There is only so much you can do being a duo BUT we have found ways to put on an amazing live show full of surprises,” she said.

“Most of all we love getting involved with our audience, making them feel a part of the show because we want them to remember that day forever. It’s an amazing feeling being able to play original songs that audiences love just as much we do, it truly inspires us to perform to the next level and to create new music and ways to perform the songs,” Naomi said.

And it’s not just the music the duo bring to the stage. Amira said the pair have worked with a choreographer for some of the songs on the EP “to create something visually entertaining and so fun to perform.”

At this point the ladies are focussing on the release of the EP ‘Replay’ but they’re hinting at a release show in August.

Chasing Velvet have plans for the future, we’re just mapping it all out for now and seeing how it all goes,” Amira said.
