CBD Sundown: It’s time to get down in Southport

Southport will bloom with arts and music during Spring when the City of Gold Coast hosts CBD Sundown.

On Friday 24 September, you can immerse yourself in the arts in Southport. As the sun sets, a FREE evening of surprise and delight awaits, delivered by some of the Gold Coast’s most talented creatives.

Southport CBD’s live music venues and forgotten spaces will come alive with pop-ups, live art, music, street performance and of course, delicious food and drinks for brand new event CBD Sundown.

Get lost down Regent Lane with This is Art and their ‘Memory Lane’ series featuring live painting, DJ mixing nostalgic disco tunes and vintage arcade games.

Pinot and Picasso will host a free paint and sip workshop under the stars whilst Mr P.P.’s Southport’s iconic rooftop bar, will be on location mixing up your favourite beverages at their pop-up Airstream bar.

The talented Anthony Pieters will be showcasing his unique ability to combine art, music and dance into a captivating visual experience which has previously been described as unexpected, meaningful, and unforgettable.

Chris Nimri, performer extraordinaire in his own right, will host the evening alongside Natasha St James, the Coast’s favourite Drag Queen.

“I’m so looking forward to it,” Chris tells us when we catch up for a chat.

Something of a Renaissance man, Chris is a regular performer at Pink Flamingo, where he does a bit of everything. Hosting, singing, dancing, you name it. He has even put together his own roller-dancing show, which CBD Sundown audiences will be treated to in September.

Surprisingly, he only pulled on a pair of roller skates for the first time during Covid last year, but with all that lockdown time up his sleeve, he got good, fast.

“I would skate as soon as I got up, and then when the sun went down, I’d still be skating!” Chris tells us.

Of course, such dedication rarely comes without injury, with Chris spraining both sides of his left ankle in an epic stack that, unfortunately, probably looked pretty funny.

“Within the first month I fell into the bowl at Pizzey Park,” Chris laughs.

CBD Sundown audiences needn’t fear however, as Chris’ in-demand skate-dancing and performance skills have seen him master the art quick smart.

“I’ll be rolling around and having fun with the crowd, and doing a little bit of a show with Natasha, too.”

We can’t wait.

Roving roller girls, busking and plenty of other surprises are in store for curious event goers. And once the event has finished, you can always kick on at one of Southport’s many fine bars, including Mr PP’s Deli & Rooftop Bar, Vinnie’s Dive Bar, Last Night on Earth, Hello K-Pop Karaoke, Cecil Hotel, Swannie’s, CBD Live or Pacific Hotel. In fact why not do a crawl to all of them, and get home via the G:Link at Nerang Street Station?

CBD Sundown is presented by City of Gold Coast, and runs from 6pm to 9pm on Friday 24 September, with ongoing Friday night activations until mid next year.
