Boardcave Secures Patent for The Board Engine

Surfboard marketplace Boardcave announces the company has secured the patent for their surfboard recommendation tool the Board Engine.

The Board Engine uses a search algorithm that utilises over 30 attributes to rank and refine surfboard models and size results.

Without any knowledge of surfboard design, customers can enter their age, weight, height, skill level and surfing frequency to get recommended a selection of surfboard models in the best shape and size.

Boardcave was the first marketplace to evolve surfboard research and buying online, co-founders and Gold Coasters Ryan Mets and Chris Greben realised the need to use technology and data to advance the way surfers find, compare and buy their next board.

Surfboards are very complicated products, with many different shapes, sizes and variables that influence how they perform for each surfer.

“The more data Boardcave gathers, the better the experience becomes,” Mets explains.

“The board engine offers a lot of exposure for the included brands and retailers. Globally, thousands of surfers utilise the algorithm to discover new models and sizes to compare and then order.”

The tool was built in 2010 by the team behind Cavewire, the software that runs the operations for many of the world’s leading surfboard brands like JS, DHD and Lost Mayhem to name a few.

Its growing popularity has led Boardcave to start licensing the recommendation engine to online retailers and brands like Sharpeye Surfboards, used by previous world champion Filipe Toledo.

COVID-19 has accelerated this as traditional retailers are having to evolve online.

“The wealth of data we’ve gathered over the last 10 years has been invaluable in providing the insights needed to refine the surfboard selection and buying experience,” Mets says.

“It’s interesting to see how surfers with a similar Boardcave profile are ranking the highest models and sizes across the industry.”
