BIGSOUND NIGHT 2: Gospel Choirs + Mama Kin Spender

When performing at BIGSOUND, you have to pull out all the stops to wow a crowd and keep them from going to watch other artists. And you know you’re in for a treat when a Brisbane gospel choir graces the stage at the Empire Hotel, fronted by Australian Roots duo Mama Kin Spender.

The sixteen piece choir from ‘I Heart Songwriting’, dressed up in their golden garb, was a sight to behold on what was a very small stage. The spine-tingling vocals of Mama Kin Spender and the choir were a match made in heaven, an impressive showcase of Australian talent and tenacity, made even more impressive by the fact they’d only practiced together for the first time the day before.

Armed only with an electric guitar and a simplified drum kit – in addition to the choir – the depth and richness of sound was enormous. The powerful performance made it easy to forget that it wasn’t a full band on stage.  Showcasing new material from their upcoming record, Mama Kin and Tommy Spender gave the crowd a glimpse into their songwriting and performing collaboration.

In a standout moment of the set the layered chanting of ‘sign my name on the dotted line’ by the choir was a showcase of skill; beautiful tight harmonies packed with energy on show.

Rounding out the set was ‘Bird In Your Tree’, the next single to be released in coming months. Mama Kin slowly brought in the floor toms, driving a continuous, pulsing beat as the choir chanted ‘bird in your tree’.

The songs of Mama Kin and Tommy Spender are gritty and commanding with clever lyrics. After a stellar performance Mama Kin Spender left the stage to resounding applause from the audience.

Mama Kin Spender blew us away with a flawless performance, packed with soulful melodies and heartfelt lyrics.
