Beyond creative arts for teachers at The Arts Centre Gold Coast

The Arts Centre Gold Coast has launched its 2016 Teacher Professional Development Program.

The Arts Centre Gold Coast is helping teachers explore all manner of creative gold with an education program which goes beyond the creative arts.

Targeted at both primary and secondary teachers and held after school on weekdays, the sessions allow educators to upskill and offer new creative experience for their students.

Here’s a run down of just some of the 17 programs on offer in 2016.

Innovation Thinking

Tuesday 1 March 2016, 4.00pm – 6.00pm, free

2015 Smithsonian Fellow Dr Kathy Mackey recently returned from Washington DC, working with the Smithsonian Centre for Learning and Digital Access. Teachers of all subject areas from Years 5 – 9 are invited to unpack the concepts behind ‘Innovation Thinking’ as a broader cycle of inquiry that embraces STEAM problem solving. This program will use gallery resources to build on the design cycle and explore economic and historical applications including the pre-conditions for invention, how we learn to recognise the unusual and to see new connections and possibilities.

Stop Motion Movie Making for Teachers

Wednesday 20 April, 3.30pm – 6.30pm, $25.00

Stop Motion Movies present an easy, creative and inexpensive way for students to create the short movie of their dreams. Facilitated by Ethan Cox (the son of Academy Award winning visual effects expert, John Cox), this workshop will guide you through the entire storytelling process, from storyboarding and camera use to actually creating a movie.

Waiting For Godot in Queensland

Friday 15 July, 4.00pm – 5.00pm, $25.00 (or $45.00 for workshop + show ticket)

Join Claudine & James Anderson from Mercury’s Wings, as they explain the creation of MWTC’s Waiting for Godot and the concepts that underpin the production. Through this workshop, teachers will explore: the concept of Existentialism and how it applies in a modern context; the structure and form of the play and how to personalize it; pace, pause and characterisation; and more.

Indigenous Immersion Day for Teachers

Wednesday 12 October, 3.30pm – 6.30pm, free

Teachers have an opportunity to connect with local artists from the South Stradbroke Island Artist Camp to develop knowledge of Indigenous and Torres Strait Islander culture and art, with a focus on identity and connection to Country. Join us for what is set to be a hands-on afternoon.
