Save our Sharks this Saturday

As news from the west emerges of a Government-led shark cull, sea-loving activists across the country are getting organised to stand up for a much maligned creature of the sea.

The Gold Coast branch of Sea Shepherd is joining dozens of like-minded organisations across the country for a Save our Sharks Rally this Saturday 4 January.

Stephanie Ashton-Walters is the Coordinator of Sea Shepherd Gold Coast. She says the rally will send a strong message to policy makers.

“Sharks are a critical part of marine ecosystems,” Stephanie said. “WA is planning to hunt down, kill and then dump sharks over 3 metres found within their coastal waters. We want to let our governments know that this is just not on.”

“Right now on the Gold Coast we have shark nets which result in the death of hundreds of marine mammals every year,” Stephanie said.

Shark nets on the Gold Coast are only 6 metres deep and only run along the length of popular beaches, not the entire coastline.

The rally starts at 11am this Saturday 4 January at Justin Park, Burleigh Heads. Look for the Sea Shepherd flags. A paddle out will take place at midday with guest speakers, shark net survey and petition signing happening soon after.
